I have become a big fan of potstickers. The tender, slightly sticky dough and flavorful filling are so tasty and satisfying. Dip them in just a bit of soy sauce for a wonderful umami experience.

Homemade potstickers are great, but they are often not very practical for a quick and easy snack. Enter frozen dumplings!

Discovering I could make Instant Pot frozen dumplings and wouldn't need to boil a pot of water was a complete game changer.

Tips For Making Instant Pot Frozen Potstickers

The best thing about cooking Instant Pot frozen dumplings is that they are done and cooked perfectly SO fast.

Even including the time it takes for the Instant Pot to come up to pressure, you can cook a whole batch of potstickers faster than it takes to boil water to steam them on the stove!

Here are a few tips to make sure they come out perfect every time.

  • Don't crowd the Instant Pot. You can cook a whole batch of dumplings or just a few but be sure to leave space between them, so they don't stick together.
  • Prevent the potstickers from sticking to the pot. (See what I did there!) Spray your metal steamer basket with a bit of oil.
  • Make sure the dumplings aren't sitting in water. Your steamer basket should sit above the water. If it doesn't, elevate it a bit by using the trivet that came with your Instant Pot. (Don't have a steamer basket yet? Check out my best Instant Pot steamer basket guide.)

How to Cook Frozen Dumplings in the Instant Pot

It's really easy to make pressure cooker frozen dumplings.

Ingredients You'll Need:

  • 1 cup water
  • 10-oz package frozen Asian-style dumplings (adjust quantity as desired)
  • Optional: 3 TBSP canola oil for browning dumplings
5 frozen Asian dumplings, or potstickers, in a steamer basket in front of an Instant Pot pressure cooker

How to Make It:

(Full printable recipe is available below)

Set Up The Instant Pot. First, you'll pour water into the Instant Pot, so we can create the steam for cooking the dumplings.

A glass measuring cup pouring water into the insert pot of the Instant Pot.

Place the potsticker dumplings into a steamer basket, then lower into the insert pot over the water.

Cook the Dumplings. Next, you'll close and seal the Instant Pot and cook the potstickers for 3 minutes at high pressure, followed by a quick release. Remove the lid and lift out the dumplings.

Brown the Dumplings (optional). Last, if desired, you can brown the dumplings. Pour out the water from the Instant Pot and dry the insert. Turn on the saute function and add the oil. When the oil is hot, add the potsticker dumplings and cook 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

Serve. I like to top mine with some sliced green onions and then serve with soy sauce for dipping. Enjoy!

Notes and Adaptations:

  • Feel free to adjust the quantity of potstickers–I often make just a few at a time for myself (it's a super simple lunch idea!). The cook time will remain the same.

Recommended Equipment:

  • Instant Pot or other electric pressure cooker
  • Steamer basket

Prep Time 1 minute

Cook Time 3 minutes

Additional Time 10 minutes

Total Time 14 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 10-oz package frozen Asian-style dumplings (adjust quantity as desired)
  • Optional: 3 TBSP canola oil for browning dumplings

Instructions

  1. Add water to the insert pot of the Instant Pot.
  2. Add frozen potsticker dumplings to a steamer basket and lower into the insert pot.
  3. Close lid and set vent to the sealed position.
  4. Select a cook time of 3 minutes at high pressure.
  5. Once the cook time is complete, perform a quick release of pressure. After the pressure has released and valve has dropped, carefully remove the lid and lift out the steamer basket (be careful--it will be hot!).
  6. Optional: If you want to brown the bottom of your dumplings, dry out the inside of the insert pot and add canola oil to the pot. Use the Saute function to heat the oil, then add the potstickers to the oil. Cook for just a minute or two to allow the bottom to turn golden-brown, the remove from the pot and serve.

Notes

Feel free to adjust the quantity of potstickers--I often make just a few at a time for myself. The cook time will remain the same.
